My Cervical Cancer Journey.. Something that has taken me a while to share

Monday 2nd Mar
There are certain moments in life that split everything into “before” and “after.”
For me, it was a phone call about a smear test.
I didn’t have dramatic symptoms
I wasn’t expecting my life to change
But it did..

Like so many women, I almost postponed my smear appointment.
I was busy. I felt fine. It didn’t feel urgent
But something told me to go..

When the results came back, I was called to hospital, sitting in a private room with a nurse telling me I had ‘cancer’.
In that split moment I didn’t think of the ‘before’ or ‘after’. I thought about the ‘now’.
I told myself not to panic.
“It’s common,” I said. “It’ll probably be nothing.”
Then came further tests
Then came the word high-grade

Cervical cancer doesn’t always look the way people imagine.

It doesn’t always mean losing your hair, but there was the chance I would
It doesn’t always mean hospital beds and dramatic scenes, but if I had left it longer it could have been worse

Sometimes it looks like:
• Sitting quietly alone on your sofa at night
• Googling survival rates
• Trying to act normal at work
• Crying in the shower so no one hears you
The fear is silent..

I had numerous treatments to remove the cancer and the procedures went well — but slight mistakes happen and you cope, you get through it with a brave face and keep fighting.. you tell yourself “I’ve got this far”
You feel vulnerable
You feel exposed
You feel scared about what comes next
But you also discover something about yourself..

Strength doesn’t always look loud or powerful
• Sometimes it looks like showing up
• Signing forms
• Lying still
• Taking deep breaths
Doing the next hard thing..

Within 13 months I finally heard them words
‘remission’
I felt relief… and exhaustion.

Because even when you’re told the cancer is dormant but there’s that high chance that it will return.
No matter what you think in that moment, you keep going..
You say to yourself “I fought it this time and I’ll put up a fight again, if I have to”

But I will say this..
• The experience stays with you
• You start to see life differently
• You appreciate small things more
• You realise how fragile and precious time really is

I’m sharing this because cervical cancer is often preventable.

• Screening saves lives
• Early detection saves lives
• Treatment can work if you give it a fighting chance
But only if you go to your smear appointments!

I am in remission because I went to mine
If my journey encourages even one woman to book hers, it’s worth it..

Cervical Cancer Awareness

Tuesday 17th Feb

Every mile I walk is for the version of me who was scared.

• For the women still fighting.

• For the futures that can still be saved.

• Cervical cancer awareness matters.

• Your smear could save your life.

I’m in remission - and walking 100 miles this March to make sure more women catch it early.
