Me & Izzy are walking 100 miles for Young Lives vs Cancer.

We're taking on the Walk 100 Miles Challenge for Young Lives vs Cancer and will be walking 100 miles in May to support children and young people with cancer.

Young Lives vs Cancer help families find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them. But every day 12 more children and young people hear the devastating news they have cancer. Make a donation and show your support today.

  • £15 could go towards a grant to cover travel costs for long journeys to live saving treatment
  • £23 could pay for an hour with a Young Lives vs Cancer Specialist Social Worker. They help families understand and cope with the emotional, practical and financial effects of cancer.
  • £60 could pay for a night in a Young Lives vs Cancer Homes from Home, a free place for families to stay close to specialist hospitals when their child is going through treatment, keeping families together

Izzy's story and why this is so important to us

Wednesday 30th Apr
In April 2024, I noticed a swollen gland in my neck. I felt fine otherwise, so when I went to see the GP, neither of us were too worried at first. The doctor sent me for blood tests (which I dreaded—needles are not my thing), but everything came back normal. Since the lump wasn’t going away, they recommended a biopsy to be on the safe side.

I had two biopsies in May and June, but neither revealed anything conclusive. In July, I had a small operation to remove the lump entirely for further testing, followed by a PET scan.

Then came 30th July—a date I’ll never forget. We met with the specialist who told me I had Nodular Lymphocyte-Predominant Hodgkin Lymphoma (NLPHL), a rare type of blood cancer. I’d never even heard of it before—and apparently, it’s especially rare for someone my age. Which wasn’t exactly what i wanted to hear…

A treatment plan was quickly put in place: 2½ weeks of daily radiotherapy down in Southampton. That meant a lot of travel, which Mum, Dad, and Sam all shared between them.

I had to have a mask made which fitted over my head, neck and shoulders, in order to keep me as still as possible during my treatment. I then started radiotherapy in September and, even though it wasn’t easy, I faced each session with strength, determination, and (true to form) my usual dose of sarcasm and kindness. I got through it—and dare I say, smashed it.

Since treatment finished, I’ve had two follow-up appointments with the consultant, and the good news is: the lymphoma has responded well and shrunk significantly. I’ll continue to have regular check-ups for the next two years as they monitor things closely.

The impact of cancer at a young age is huge—not just physically but emotionally too. Not a day goes by where i don’t relive a moment in my head or think about everything that i’ve been through and all the young people who are still struggling and won’t have a good outcome.

But aside from that I have been incredibly lucky, not only to have got through and survived it but i’ve also been lucky to have an incredible support system around me, and one big part of that has been Young Lives vs Cancer (YLvsC). Their help has been invaluable through it all, and we want to give something back.

So, in May, me & Mum are taking on a challenge to walk 100 miles to raise funds for YLvsC—and we’d love your support. Whether it’s a donation, sharing our story, or cheering us on, every little helps.

Thank you for standing with me and helping us support other young people going through cancer.
