I'm walking 100 miles for Young Lives vs Cancer.

I'm taking on the Walk 100 Miles Challenge for Young Lives vs Cancer. I will be walking 100 miles in May to support children and young people with cancer.

Young Lives vs Cancer help families find the strength to face whatever cancer throws at them. But every day 12 more children and young people hear the devastating news they have cancer. Make a donation and show your support today.

  • £15 could go towards a grant to cover travel costs for long journeys to live saving treatment
  • £23 could pay for an hour with a Young Lives vs Cancer Specialist Social Worker. They help families understand and cope with the emotional, practical and financial effects of cancer.
  • £60 could pay for a night in a Young Lives vs Cancer Homes from Home, a free place for families to stay close to specialist hospitals when their child is going through treatment, keeping families together

Join me in supporting a good cause, your contribution will make a big impact, whether you donate £5 or £500. Every little bit helps. Thank you for your support.

Happy Hughie

Thursday 29th May
We have walked over 9 miles in the last two days exploring sidari port , beach and the town and running around after this loonatic who is full of energy and excitement 😂 even though we have met our target we will keep going until the end of the month for this amazing important charity

Change of scenery during challenge

Tuesday 27th May
Yesterday we flew to Greece and Hughie was a little superstar when travelling and a bit of a wild child today. He has enjoyed splashing in the pool and looking at the change of scenery and also running us ragged to keep us on our toes 😂 We have done over 8 miles in the last two days but enjoyed soaking in the new beautiful environment today during our walks 😎

100 miles complete

Sunday 25th May
We have met our target and will continue to walk until the end of the month.
We actually complete our challenge on Friday. We walked from my friends house through shipley park, to the black horse in mapperly for a cheeky cider and back  which clocked up to over 7 miles.
Unfortunately Hughie was poorly in the evening with his breathing,  wee rang 111 and they sent a ambulance to check him over. By the time they went it was 2 am and Hughie had settled down so we didn't need to go to the hospital thank God!!  Hence why I didn't get chance to upload.
Yesterday he was feeling a bit rubbish with a cold and cough and feeling sorry for himself , so we had lots cuddles.  Today we have been here there and everywhere and finally packed our suitcase for our holiday to Greece tomorrow. Over last two days clocked up 7 miles.  Think our little man likes to panic us and keep us on our toes but he's so worth it 💙

Last two days update

Thursday 22nd May
So close to our 100 miles in my for Young Lives vs Cancer will continue to do walking when we have reached the target. Today we did a long walk with my friend, we stroked the big horse and looked at the lovely scenery with Merissa Rippon. I even managed to fall over gawping at new houses being built 🤣 8.6 miles today. Yesterday we walked to my friends Amy Carter to have a lovely little play date and we even got to chill while the boys were asleep. This week has been tough with achy body , pain in knees and sore feet but worth it for an amazing charity. Please continue to donate and share for the amazing warriors going through tough times ❤️🧡💛💚💙🩵💜

Last 3 days

Thursday 15th May
On Tuesday we had a lovely sunny paddling pool day with Hughies friend kai and cousin Theo , followed by an evening walk around the canal with our lovely neighbour Gill so clocked up 3.7 miles. Yesterday Hughie has a vision test at Birmingham. This went really well and has improved , which is fabulous news!! We then walked around Birmingham and clocked up 4.2 miles. Hughie was a superstar so we had a cheeky mc Donald's trip for tea. Hughie enjoyed pulling suitcases with Daddy to the hotel , where we had a sleepover for his check up for his general anesthesia today. Unfortunately mummy and daddy only got 5 hours sleep because Hughie was very unsettled in the night We powered through today and we had great news. Hughies tumours are still not active and no new tumours which was amazing. It's nearly been a whole year since any treatment!!! ( july). We are so incredibly proud. We managed to only clock 1.5 miles today due to Hughie feeling a bit rubbish. So we had lots of cuddles to make him feel better 🥰 Unfortunately I was speaking to a parent with a 10 week old baby ,her older son had just been diognosed 6 weeks a go with cancer in his tummy. He had chemo straight away and has a operation planned next week to remove tumour. I cannot stop thinking about the brave warrior, who appeared to be so chilled but did worry about his hair but probably terrified inside 💙 I did mention to her about this charity and others where she can get help and support as they are quite new to there journey. I really cannot stop thinking about him and I really hope his cancer journey goes well. You don't realise how many children and families are going through childhood cancer , until you are surrounded by it. I just wish I could cure them all 🧡💛💚💙💜 This is why this charity is so important to us personally and also everyone else!!!

Still smiling

Monday 12th May
Just over a year ago today Hughie had his second chemotherapy injection into his eye and was still smiling after. Since then his tumours have been inactive and we hope it stays that way. We have a eye test and a check up under general ansethtic on Thursday. This is the longest apart his check ups have been which has been around 7 weeks. Whereas before it was 2 to 4 weeks. It's amazing but also causes mummy and daddy anxiety as you can imagine

Our warrior Hughie 💙

Saturday 12th Apr
I am doing this challenge as it is very close to our heart as a family. Young live vs cancer have supported us when Hughie first got diagnosed both financially and mentally , aswell as many other families on the tough journey.
Hughie was diagnosed with Retinoblastoma at just a day old when he was just 4lb 12 in neonatal. After 3 days we got transferred to Birmingham to see the extent of Hughies tumours under a general ansethtic. We then got 3 precious days at home , before Hughie started his first round of systemic chemotherapy. At the end of the first round of chemo I noticed his breathing was not right. After convincing the doctors that my instincts was right , within a couple of hours and a few test Hughie was also diagnosed with a coarctation in his aorta in his heart.
We was moved straight to picu and Hughie was put on medication to help his blockage but had risks it could stop his breathing. The next day we was transfered via ambulance to leicster hospital to discuss next steps. This was tricky due to his nutrifil levels and other levels due to the effects of chemo. Discussions were had between Birmingham,  leicster and Qmc hospitals to ensure the best outcome for Hughie.
He couldn't have his surgery on his heart for 5 weeks as this was the safest time. This was because he was badly at risk of infection, low blood levels and overall vulnerability. Thought out our time we had a grant from young live vs cancer , support via telephone , total understanding if we couldn't be available for the booked in phone calls. This helped us so much as we still had bills to pay in a house that we couldn't live in , buy clothes as all we had was the hospital bag and toiletries for the week we had planned to be in and they also offered great guidance of where we could get further help, which helped a very emotional,  stressful and difficult situation be a little easier.
Even though your child is ill and your life comes crashing down , you still have the everyday worries too.
Fast forward Hughies recovered well from his co arcatation repair and we had two weeks for full recovery and then he started his second round of chemo. The phone calls of support were amazing because we couldn't even see family and friends much to protect Hughie from his vulnerable situation and sometimes you need just a normal conversation or someone different to speak to to side track from the heart ache and trauma.
Overall Hughie had 6 rounds of chemotherapy,  he became unwell at some points with viruses (we only went to hospital and home ) during this time, had blood transfusions , 100 of blood tests and many other procedures.
We got to know many very strong, courageous children and parents who also recieved excellent support too from this fabulous charity from birth to teenage years.
After 6 rounds of chemo hughie went on to having two chemo injections into his eyes as his tumours grew again when he finished systemic chemo. He had laser treatment ,cryotherapy,  billions of eyebrows,  eye catching and 100s if not more of general ansethtic.
We are at the stage where his tumours are inactive and have been for around 6 months but there is still a high risk they can come back. This risk lowers a little when he is two which is in June.
He continues to keep growing and thriving regardless of what he has been through anx is constantly so happy in life, which has gave me and his daddy so much strength to carryon.
We would like to thank young lives vs cancer for their previous and ongoing support to all families of children experiencing or have experienced cancer.  Please donate if you can because it will certainly help in very very difficult times.  Xxz
