What Young Lives V Cancer Means to Us

Monday 15th Jul

Hello friends 👋 Audy is taking on her first fundraising challenge this summer 💜 The Young Lives V Cancer "Kids Summer Challenge". To walk, run, swim or cycle 1 mile a day throughout August.

Young Lives V Cancer is a charity that is very close to our hearts. The charity part-funded our wonderful community nurses, Olivia and Catherine. These nurses would come to our house every week when Ottie wasn't on in-patient treatment to take her regular bloods and change her Hickman line dressings, train us to administer specialist meds, occasionally change her NG tube and generally check in on all of us. They would also help to arrange alternative care during our mini breaks to Cornwall to visit family.

They always made sure Audy was included in these visits, letting her help Ottie stick the labels on to the blood viles and sealing the envelopes ready to be sent off to the lab. And when Ottie had to have the scarier things done, like the changing of dressings or NG tubes, they'd watch as Audy would sit close by and read Ottie a story to help keep her calm.

Having this connection with the community nurses was so important for Audy as it was the only time she ever got to see this side of Ottie's care. As we were in the midst of Covid, Audy was never able to come to hospital with us and never met any of Ottie's other nurses or doctors.

Catherine also played a huge part in readying us for, and helping us through, the transition to palliative and then End of Life care. She was even at the hospital at the very end when we had to make the decision to move to the hospice.

We couldn't have got through those 21 months without them.

Audy is very excited to get started and would love it if you could sponsor her. And if any friends would like to join her in the challenge, please do sign them up, we'd love that!

Thank you to my Sponsors
